I have been passionate about creating art since I was a little kid. I was raised in a family that was very supportive, my brothers and I were encouraged to pursue our interests, whatever they might be. I loved to draw. I think most kids like to draw but after a while that desire to draw usually fades in people. It didn’t go away for me. I continued to love art and at around 12 years old I started to paint with acrylics. I would paint scenes out of my favorite fantasy books like The Lord of the Rings or The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. I have always been interested in the creation of “other” worlds. To show other realities that exist only in the imagination.
I continued to pursue my art through High School and attended The University of Texas where I majored in Fine Arts. It was while I was at UT that I began to draw chalkboards for Chili’s restaurants. I was working as a cook at the time and did the chalkboards for my store. I soon had the opportunity to take over for the artist who was drawing the chalkboards for the new Chili’s that were opening up around the country. At first this was a part time job but after a while it grew into a full time occupation. It was at this time that I decided to take a break from college. A break that turned out to be permanent.
That was over twenty years ago and I have managed to make a living through art since. I have been very lucky to have been able to do what I do. I have drawn thousands of chalkboards over the years. And I still enjoy it! In addition to Chili’s I have had the opportunity to work with many companies, including Dell Computers, Sam Adams, Macaroni Grill, On The Border, GSD&M among others.
When I am not drawing chalkboards I like to paint in oils and acrylics. My subject matter varies from fantasy, to realism, to portraits of friends and family. I am looking forward to continuing to grow as an artist and explore new imaginative worlds.
I live in Austin Texas with my beautiful wife Jennifer, my two amazing children Erin and Sydney, my spirited step-daughter Juliet and our three stupid dogs.
